About the History of Cosmetics

The first thing that you might wonder is where the history of cosmetics really began. This is unknown, but it is safe to assume that the cosmetics have been used, in one way or another, for thousands of years. The reason for cosmetics was not just for beauty reasons, but rather also for cultural reasons.

For example, in ancient cultures, women would add rouge to their faces by grinding various minerals into a powdered form and applying them to their face. They used things like slate as a mirror. They also used various minerals to adorn their eyes, and add pigment to their hair.

As time went on in the history of cosmetics, the uses for cosmetics came to include both men and women. For example, in Europe the aristocracy often used thick white powder on their faces and bosoms. This also had another reason, however, because the powder was supposed to hide the scars they had from various diseases such as smallpox.

Cosmetics also were used for symbolic reasons. Famously, when Elizabeth I became known as the Virgin Queen, she used white powder on her face, and most paintings of her portray her as wearing such. However, there was also another reason for that she did not want people to see her age.

There was a time in Europe when cosmetics were not as uniformly used. This was specifically during the Victorian era, when simplicity was favored as well as natural beauty. However, as the History of cosmetics went on, cosmetics made a big comeback.

During the early part of the 20th century, especially in America, the idea was to use as much makeup as possible for a glamorous look. The movie stars were the ones that everyone followed when it came to makeup styles, thus the idea was to use things like vibrant red lipstick and dramatic eye makeup.

For example, a common annoyance was that lipstick always seemed to wear off during the day. No doubt you have seen movies in which a character applies some lipstick. However now there are various brands that are guaranteed not to wear off for several hours.

There are also brands now that add an extra gloss to the lips, which could take the place of some kinds of lip gloss that might need to be applied more often. This is kind of interesting, because in the movies, it looks as if the lips of the actresses are especially shimmering. This is because, at least in the older movies, Vaseline was applied to the lips.

It is interesting that there are a variety of older people who still prefer lipstick, while younger people would rather use lip gloss. This really only has to do with how much it is being marketed now, and part of the marketing has to do with the colors.

For example, if you are the kind of person who prefers an informal look, you would probably prefer a light shade. These kinds of shades can be used in conjunction with various kinds of lip gloss for a stylish look.

If you are the kind of person who prefers a more dramatic look, you should choose darker tones, especially for night events. If course, the color you choose should also have to do with the color of your skin. For example, if you have lighter skin you should choose darker colors, and if you have darker skin you should choose lighter colors.

Choose a lighter shade for day or try applying one layer and then blotting it with a makeup sponge. The effect is that your lips look stained red instead of caked with heavy lipstick. It's more natural and much more work appropriate! Friday night out, or whatever night you choose, have fun, glam it up, and take advantage of your red lipstick research after office hours are over.

For The Extremely Timid
