How Safe Are Silicone Breast Implants?
The safety of breast augmentation procedures is constantly under scrutiny. In general, as compared to the total number of yearly breast augmentations performed, the consensus is that breast implants are in fact safe. When it comes to the silicon implant, there is much more debate on the safety of having the procedure done. Although silicon is a naturally found mineral in the human body, the absorption of silicon by means other than through consumption is not good. Some people’s body has no problems absorbing this mineral even in its gelatinous form, while still yet others may have severe complications associated with it.
When a silicon implant ruptures, it leaks ever so slowly. There are many variables involved when dealing with silicon implants. In most cases, this scar tissue layer that develops around the implant creates a protective barrier that will contain the silicon in case of a rupture without an issue. There is still no substantial proof that the body’s absorption of silicon leads to caner and therefore it cannot even be considered as part of the possible risks of the procedure. In some cases, the silicon has reached the tissue of the lungs causing lymph node growths than are impossible to remove safely.
