Body Image, Body Odor, and Appetite Suppressants
Why do we punish ourselves by trying to look so slim? It is probably commonly recognized now that men are as affected by their body image and self image as are women, and that men and women’s health can be badly affected by this desire.
What may surprise you is that this is not a new phenomenon.
Is the rail thin appearance of runaway and magazine models a new obsession which has started young girls and women on a path towards starvation, malnutrition and disorders such as anorexia and bulimia?
Actually, No.
It was back in the 1920s that Western countries had the fixation of extreme slimming, thus causing many women of all ages to try to attain that wafer thin body, starving themselves and exercising frantically to achieve this goal.
The fuller figure did make a comeback during the depression, but quickly reverted in the 60’s with thinness being equated with physical beauty.
Because your skin has such a large surface area, it is actually the largest body organ (although some men might deny that!). As such, it plays a vital part in satisfying the breathing function. The skin has the capacity to soak up many things which can be absorbed into the bloodstream. To get a feel for this, allow some peppermint oil to come in contact with the underside of your feet. Within a quarter of an hour, you will be tasting peppermint! Nicotine patches and those used for HRT and other medical reasons work exactly the same way, on the absorbency of the skin.
The skin can not only absorb smells, liquids, etc, it can also excrete waste products, and this accounts for us perspiring.
Given the high level of transference from ‘outside’ to ‘inside’, you would really wonder why writing on labels of various skin preparations states ‘do not swallow or ingest’. Well actually, my friend, whatever you put on your skin, does get transferred around the body, so beware of what you put on your skin.
You may well ask “Is it advisable to take weight loss products that will help suppress my appetite?” The answer is a resounding NO!
Weight gain is more likely to happen with foods that are difficult for the body to break down. Your body gives you hunger signals when it needs more fuel. If you eat the wrong foods, i.e. those that have poor nutritional value, then your body will keep telling you that you need more food so that it gets the vital ingredients. Your health will significantly degrade if you just cut back the nutrient-poor food that you are having. You can get away with this over a short time, but if you do this over a long period of time, your health will suffer. This is why weight loss supplements are not such a good idea.
