Adenoids are little clumps of spongy tissue found near the back of your throat where your tonsils are. Their main purposes are to trap and drain the bacteria in the throat so that your mouth and other body systems are protected from these bacteria.
Unfortunately, that is also why adenoids can sometimes cause halitosis in people. Bacteria that are left alone for some time will start releasing foul smelling gases and these gases will travel to your mouth as bad breath. Cover-ups such as gum and mints may not be sufficient in such cases and all they do is to only mask bad breath but not to eliminate the root cause.
