Black Lipstick

Who Wears Black Lipstick?

Lipstick was first used in ancient Mesopotamia. The people there crushed semi-precious stones and applied it to the lips and eyes to add color. Cleopatra used crushed carmine beetles, which gave a deep red hue, and ants that were used for a base. To achieve a shimmering pearly look, a substance from fish scales was used.

Queen Elizabeth I gave rise to the use of lipstick when she popularized white faces with blood red lips. During this time, lipstick was made from beeswax and plant stains. Lipstick gained more popularity during World War II, when the movie industry took off. It became common for women to put on lipstick during ordinary days.

Ingredients of Lipstick

Lipstick comes in different kinds and colors. There are nudes, reds, pinks and even black lipstick. Lipstick ingredients are usually made of some kind of wax, oil, alcohol and pigment. The wax could be any of three waxes generally used to make lipstick; beeswax, candelilla wax or camauba. Of the three waxes, camauba is the most expensive. The wax is used to give the mixture its shape.

The oil like mineral, caster, lanolin or vegetable, is added to the wax for malleability and the alcohol, fragrance and pigment are also added to achieve color and texture of the lipstick. Preservatives and antioxidants are added to the mix to prevent the lipstick from turning rancid. Other ingredients may be added to make the lipstick different from others, such as smoother lipstick or pearlized lipstick.

Black Lipstick

Black lipstick is the rage for people who are into the gothic look. The Gothic look pertains to black or dark clothes, usually dark red, purple or black, and putting on make up to make you look gaunt. Wearing dark or black lipstick and eye makeup is part of the Goth look. To really pull this off, you need to make the base pale, so people who are into the Goth look put on foundation or face powder that is shades lighter than their complexion.

Some black lipstick comes with different undertones. There are blue or green undertones and some are really just black. Sometimes black lipstick is used to complement costumes especially in Halloween. This is a very vital make up for achieving a scary look for the season of spooks. You may also use black lipstick to put on your teeth to achieve a toothless look. Over all, this kind of lip color is not commonly used and is pretty hard to come by unless it is the season to be scary.
